Research Interests: radiation detection in neutron science
My research is geared towards the design and implementation of radiation detectors primarily for use in neutron science. Radiation detectors are important devices and can be found in all sorts of industries including border security, materials research, space weather monitoring, and are crucial for the health and safety of nuclear energy workers. My current project is the commissioning of the McMaster Small Angle Neutron Scattering (MacSANS) laboratory which will be Canada’s premier user facility this application. The MacSANS facility will serve the needs of researchers worldwide in their studies of crystalline and biological materials

My research project investigates the protective role of estrogen in pancreatic beta cell health and function and atherosclerosis progression. In the bigger picture, I am studying what are the mechanisms that allow women before menopause to be protected from diabetes and its associated cardiovascular complications, compared to men or women after diabetes

Research Interests: Mass transfer at selective interfaces
I research the process of mass transfer at selective interfaces. One example is how some active ingredients bind to and un-bind from a surface. Another example is how a sensor responds to these active ingredients over time and across locations. My goal is to make the tools in these examples to be easy to understand, easy to modify, and easy on your wallet. My market is helping the diagnosed get low-cost biopharmaceuticals and helping the rest know their body, food, water and environment. Equally important: I want to help newcomers learn how I learned what I learned.

Research Interests: fish behaviour & physiology in changing environments
I am a comparative physiologist at McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada. My primary research interest is understanding the behavioural and physiological strategies fishes use to cope with changing environmental conditions. A major focus has been understanding the functional morphology of fish gills, what this means for respiration and metabolism under various environmental conditions, and investigating how intra- and inter-specific differences in respiratory performance and other metabolic traits influences behaviours such as habitat choice. My work is focused around two model systems: (1) the rivuline killifishes, a species-rich clade of tropical fishes that includes amphibious species that can survive for months out of water, and (2) the redside dace, an endangered freshwater minnow native to northeastern North America.
